The Gift of Tongues

Elder Varvel's time in the MTC was quickly coming to an end. He has been really excited to get to Texas and be in the mission field, but speaking Spanish still made him nervous. He said he was understanding it really good in the MTC, but speaking it wasn't as easy. We sent him and his companion a 'Gift of Tongues' package. Everything in it was hot, spicy, sweet, sour, or anything else to wake up their tongues and help them with the language. We were hoping it would help kick start their last week of Spanish in the MTC. He said it was a big hit with him and the rest of his District.

Good luck Elder Varvel! We know your Spanish will be great!

Elder Varvel at 5'8", and Elder Checketts at 6'7". They make quite a pair!
Sawyer will be a biking missionary!
Apparently his 4th of July package made it :)!
This is the line of missionaries leaving the Marriott Center after a devotional.  I bet that is an amazing sight to see thousands of missionaries in a line from the Marriott Center to the MTC.
It's good to see that they still find time to goof off :)!

What E'er Thou Art, Act Well Thy Part

We've been getting lots of e-mails and letters from Elder Varvel! He has been out for two weeks, and it seems like he's doing fantastic! He loves any communication with friends and family. He can receive e-mails throughout his mission at sawyer.varvel@myldsmail.net. He gets an hour once a week on the computer to read them and respond. He says he prefers letters though, because then he has a hard copy with him to read and reread throughout the week.

He sent an e-mail telling us about all the guys in his district. Here's what he had to say about one of them. "Elder Richards is basically Captain America...he is so buff. I have been following some of his workout routines and I really wish I hadn't, because now I can hardly move." That made us laugh!

He was able to go to the Provo Temple once, but now it's closed for cleaning. He might not be able to go again while he's in the MTC. He was bummed about that.

Elder Varvel and his companion had a hard learning experience while 'teaching' someone in the MTC. This is what Sawyer had to say about it.
In my e-mail I told you that we had an experience teaching Isaac that was really rough, so I will tell you more about that. We had been teaching him for awhile and we had been doing really well. He had been reading the pamphlets we gave him and the Book of Mormon. We even got him to pray and say yes to coming to church with us! But then the next lesson we taught went downhill. It was probably the best lesson we taught because we could feel the spirit so strongly and words were coming to our mouths that we didn't even think we knew. But it wasn't what he needed I guess, because when we asked him if he had faith in Jesus Christ and a belief in God he just kept saying no. That's when we realized that we really hadn't gotten to know Isaac. We asked him why he didn't have faith and he told us a story about his dad that made him lose his faith in God, but we couldn't understand any of it. It was really rough and since we couldn't understand him, we just moved on with the lesson. After that he didn't really seem interested in what we had to say. I was about to read a scripture and he just said, "Thank you for coming and I will see you next time." We left the room, and when the 'real' Hermano Torres asked us to come back in, he asked us how we felt. Elder Checketts started to cry and if I hadn't been in front of people I probably would have too. Elder Checketts said he had experienced something like that before. It is really rough! I felt so much love for Isaac and he isn't even a real person! It was a learning experience that I won't forget for the rest of my mission. We've decided that our next lesson is just going to be about Isaac, getting to know him better, and just being his friend.

I asked him in another e-mail if they were still teaching Isaac. This is what he said.
We are still teaching Isaac and it went soooo much better both times after that. On Monday when we closed the door, me and Elder Checketts went cheering and screaming, "He's getting baptized" down the hallways because the lesson went so good! It just gives a whole new perspective of having good days and bad days in the mission, but the experience as a whole is just amazing!

It's going to be so hard celebrating the 4th of July without Sawyer tomorrow! We are going to the Stadium of Fire in Provo. We will be less than a mile from him, but won't be able to see him. The missionaries get to go out to the field and watch the fireworks show. This is what Sawyer wrote about that, "It's crazy to think we will be close enough to watch the exact same show, but still two years apart." That made me want to cry! We sent him a 4th of July package to help brighten his holiday. He said that every Elder in his district took a picture of him wearing his sunglasses with his headband on, and waving his little flag! I hope someone used his camera, because I'm dying to see one of those pictures! What a nut!

We got an e-mail from him today, and this is a little message he shared with us from a devotional he had been to.
There is a replica of a stone that President David O. McKay saw while he was on his mission that completely changed his mission. At the top of the stone is the message, "What e'er thou art, act well thy part." It really made a difference in the way I view my mission. Whenever I have a situation to deal with when I'm out here I ask myself how I can be the BEST missionary. Then when I get an answer, I act on it! That strategy can be used in any one's life. People should be asking themselves the question, how can I be the BEST brother/sister? How can I be the BEST spouse? How can I be the BEST Priesthood holder? How can I be the BEST parent? Then after asking themselves the question, they should find a way to do it! Abraham Lincoln once said, "Whatever you are, be a good one." What E'er thou art, act well thy part!

Two Letters in One Week!

We are feeling very grateful! Elder Varvel hasn't even been gone for a week, and we just received our second letter. It sounds like he is doing great! This was a paper they gave the missionaries to fill out and send home with mission information on it, and a place to write a quick note. Here's what he had to say:

Branch 56
Branch President- President Mortensen
1st Counselor- Brother Russon
2nd Counselor- Brother Sowby
My Companion's name is: Elder Braden Checketts
My Companion is from: Layton, Utah
My Address is: 2009 North 900 East, Provo, Utah 84604
My Mail Box # is: 155
My Preparation Day is on Wednesday (the only day I can write/e-mail)
Quick Note to Family:

I know I just wrote but this is just a letter to write to give some basic information about the mission. The spanish is coming on really well. My teacher is Hermana Gibbons who just got off her mission a year and a half ago. She only speaks spanish to us but I can understand her just like she was speaking english, but I still can't speak it very well. I prayed in spanish and that was fun. I had to use a cheat sheet but it is coming along quicker than any of the spanish classes I took in high school. I am in the same hall as Elder Lindley. I saw Elder Egbert and talked with him today. Elder Schwendiman came up and gave me a big bear hug during lunch, so I am not the only one I know in here! Yay! Curtis will be coming in next week so I should be seeing him soon. Elder Checketts is still the man! I couldn't have asked for a better first companion! I just wish I was taller and he was shorter. We are going out on P-day and just having a picture run, where we take pictures around everything significant in the MTC. For example, one of the secrets we found out was there is a tree in the MTC that smells like cream soda. It is awesome! So far I am having a blast and I am being taken care of! I love you guys and I hope you miss me a lot because I'm so awesome :)!
-Elder Sawyer Varvel

I'm so glad he's finding all of the Bonneville missionaries in the MTC! I'm happy his spanish is coming along good. And I'm especially glad he loves his companion, and they are planning a picture run! Sounds like his first week has been great!

First Letter!

We got our first letter from Elder Varvel today. We weren't expecting a hand written one, so we hadn't been getting the mail. He wrote it the night he got there, so it probably sat in our mailbox for a couple days. I checked the mail on Sunday, and there it was! Here's what he had to say:

Dear Family!
It is the day you dropped me off at the MTC and I am getting ready to go to bed now, so I will just tell you what happened after you drove away! My host was a really nice guy and he sent me into the building where you get your tag and your packet with the schedule and basically the necessities. Then he took me to my residence which is a cozy little room that I share with 3 other Elders who I will talk about in a minute. After I dropped off my luggage in my room, I went and picked up all the study materials I would need for my time here and me and my host separated. There I met the rest of my district which is all Elders. I think we are the only district who doesn't have any sisters in it. I am the shortest person in the district and my companion, whose name is Elder Braden Checketts,  is a whopping 6'7", being the tallest in the district. Elder Checketts is great! He is a complete spaz; even spazzier than me, and he is very strong in the Gospel.  He is from Layton, Utah and will be my companion the duration of my stay at the MTC. There are 8 other missionaries in the district who are all great guys as well. Most of them are going to Lubbock except for two staying in our room who are going to Pennsylvania. I found out that the Spanish and Italian missionaries live in the same building so me and Tyler are right down the hall from each other!  This Sunday all the missionaries in the MTC are going to this huge broadcast at the Marriott Center with the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve, so I got here just in time for something awesome! You guys should watch it and look for me in the congregation! It is almost lights out so I will let you know more about the classes and the food as soon I find out more about it! Love you guys and miss you lots! Tell the dogs and the fish hi for me! Just know that it has been really good so far!
-Elder Varvel

I love the height difference between him and his companion! I can't wait to see pictures of that! We have all breathed a sigh of relief now that we know he is happy and doing good!

MTC Drop Off

Sawyer entered the Provo MTC on Wednesday, June 19th. This was the day we'd been dreading, and anxiously awaiting all at the same time. We left early and stopped at The Cheesecake Factory for lunch on the way down. We got there an hour early and hung out across the street from the MTC, at the park by the Temple, before we dropped him off. This is where we had to take pictures and say our good byes, because when you pull up to the curb at the MTC, the other missionaries are there helping to get his bags out of the car, and whisk him away.
Our handsome missionary ready to start his journey.

Sawyer and Bailey's final hug goodbye.
I can't even express in words how much I'm gonna miss this guy!
One last moment with his dad.
This was our last 30 seconds with him at the curb of the MTC.
As we drove off, Bailey was crying, but still managed to strap her  'replacement Sawyer' into his seat :)!
We left the MTC and drove straight to a Post Office. I had his first package all ready to send him, and we wanted to mail it from close by so he would get it the next day. We sent him a letter writing package. I ordered him cool Texas notecards and postcards specific to his mission. We included fun missionary stationary, pens, stamps, stickers, and anything else we could think of that would make his letter writing easier.  I'm going to love writing letters to him and sending him packages!
We feel like the hard part is over. The anticipation of him leaving and saying good bye was killing us! Now we can sit back and watch the Lord work miracles in his life for the next two years. Good luck Elder Varvel! We love you and are so proud of you!

Reeses

One of the hardest goodbyes that Sawyer had to make was with Reeses. They've been best friends since Sawyer was 13 years old, and Reeses was 6 weeks old. They went on their last walk the day before he left. The morning we were leaving, Sawyer finally broke down and said he couldn't even look at her. Reeses knew something wasn't right. Our carefree, spazzy, out of control dog was so subdued, and wouldn't take her eyes off him. It broke our hearts and got us all crying.
Their last walk together for 2 years.
Poor Reeses looked so sad, and wouldn't take her eyes off of Sawyer.

She was so sweet. She looked up at him and put her paw up on his leg.
